SOVIET WW2 Medal for the Defense of Leningrad.
This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL Soviet era medal made at the Leningrad Mint to be officially issued by the Soviet Government – not a replica or souvenir!
The medallion is in gilded brass, measures 32.1 mm wide. The medal is so-called Variation 2 or Voenkomat (Local Military Commissariat) issue which is characterized by the rounded eyelet stamped as one piece with the medallion. This variation was made in 1960s-80s and awarded to WW2 veterans who either lost their early award or, more often, to those who were eligible for the medal but had not received previously. Some of the post-war Voenkomat medals – including the Medal for the Defense of Leningrad - are actually less common than the WW2 issues!
The medal is in VERY GOOD condition. It shows practically no wear: completely free of any scratches, dings, edge knocks or bumps. The raised details are pristine and crisp. There is some tarnish to the gold finish that adds character and some minor blemishes, mostly on the reverse, but the gold finish remains beautifully bright, especially on the obverse. The medal comes on original aluminum suspension with well-preserved old ribbon. All-in-all, this is a really nice example!
