History:
The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George is a British knightly order founded on 28 April 1818 by George, Prince of Wales (later George IV) during his time as Prince Regent of his father, George III.
The Order is used to reward individuals who have performed significant important services related to the Commonwealth of Nations or foreign nations.
The order's motto is Auspicium melioris ævi (from Lat. "Sign of a Better Era"). The patron saints of the Order are the Archangel Michael and Saint George. One of the most important symbols is St. Michael smites Satan.
The Order is ranked sixth in seniority in the British awards system, after the Orders of the Garter, Thistle, St. Patrick, Bath and Star of India.
The order was originally created to perpetuate a British protectorate over the Ionian Islands (control of which was gained in 1814; the islands received a constitution in 1817). It was planned to reward them with "the natives of the Ionian Islands and the island of Malta and their dependent, and other similar subjects of His Majesty who can manage important and confidential situations in the Mediterranean."
In 1864, however, the protectorate ended and the Ionian Islands became part of Greece. The Statute of the Order was revised in 1868; now members of the Order could become those who "hold high and confidential positions in the colonial possessions of His Majesty, and as a reward for services to the Crown related to foreign affairs of the Empire." Governors-General of Commonwealth states usually receive the title of Knight of the Great Cross or Commander either at the beginning or at the end of their term of office in these positions, if the respective state does not have its own reward system. This practice was discontinued in Australia in 1989 and in New Zealand in 2000.
In 1965, the order was opened to women, the first companion (CMG) was Evelyn Bark, for her service in the British Red Cross.
